Six teaching assistants (TAs) and one graduate course instructor (CI) have been recognized with 2024 Teaching Excellence Awards by the ��ɫֱ��’s Teaching Assistants’ Training Program.

The TA Teaching Excellence, BIPOC TA Teaching Excellence and CI Teaching Excellence awards recognize the outstanding contributions of TAs and graduate student CIs who regularly support, inspire and challenge undergraduate students.

The recipients of the TA Teaching Excellence Awards are:

In 2022, the Teaching Assistants’ Training Program introduced the BIPOC Teaching Excellence Award to recognize lived experiences of Black, Indigenous and racialized communities whose academic experiences have been impacted by systemic barriers, and to highlight their accomplishments and excellence in teaching practice. The winner of this award for 2024 is Titilola Aiyegbusi from the department of English in the Faculty of Arts & Science.

The recipient of the CI Teaching Excellence Award is Kat Furtado from the department of classics in the Faculty of Arts & Science.

Kent Moore, vice-principal, research at the ��ɫֱ�� Mississauga and Distinguished Professor of Theoretical Geophysics of Climate Change in the department of chemical and physical sciences, has been awarded a Patterson Distinguished Service Medal by Environment and Climate Change Canada.

The prestigious award was created in 1946 in honour of meteorologist and ��ɫֱ�� alum Dr. John Patterson and recognizes outstanding contributions to meteorology in Canada.

Moore is renowned for his climate research in the Arctic and mountainous regions. He has published more than 200 peer-reviewed manuscripts, received over 65 national and international grants and awards and given numerous media interviews on his research and issues related to climate change.

“I’m incredibly honoured,” said Moore, who is praised by peers for his collaborative nature, empathetic leadership and creative approach to research. “To join the ranks of Canada’s leaders in meteorology who have received this award before me — it means a great deal.”

“It’s also a testament to the contributions of the many students, fellows, and colleagues I’ve worked with over the years. It’s been a privilege to collaborate with such generous and committed scientists.”

“Professor Moore’s research program has transformed our understanding of the impacts of climate change in polar and mountainous regions,” said W. Richard Peltier, a University Professor in the department of physics at the Faculty of Arts & Science who nominated Moore for the award. “His highly interdisciplinary and internationally recognized body of knowledge has fostered excellence in climate science, contributing to Canada’s global leadership in the field.”

Moore received his Patterson Medal in a ceremony at the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society Congress this June.

Five faculty members at the ��ɫֱ�� have been recognized with 2023-24 Cheryl Regehr Early Career Teaching Awards.

The annual awards are given to faculty members who demonstrate an exceptional commitment to student learning, pedagogical engagement and teaching innovation.

They are named for Cheryl Regehr, a professor in the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work and a champion of teaching excellence and innovation who served as ��ɫֱ��’s vice-president and provost for a decade.

The award recipients are:

Seven students from across the ��ɫֱ�� are recipients of the 2023-2024 Inlight Research Fellowships awarded by Inlight Student Mental Health Research, a ��ɫֱ�� institutional strategic initiative committed to improving student mental health and wellness outcomes.

The $10,000 fellowships support graduate scholars who are leading research projects that aim to improve student mental health and well-being on campus and recognize the importance of student-led and co-designed research solutions.

“The Inlight Research Fellowship Program is dedicated to promoting the development of leaders in post-secondary student mental health research,” said Julius Haag, Inlight’s associate director, education and training and an assistant professor, teaching stream in the department of sociology at ��ɫֱ�� Mississauga.

“We are actively supporting impactful research that will grow the perspectives and capacity needed to advance student mental health and wellness, as well as centring research that focuses on engaging the experiences and perspectives of our diverse student community.”

David Yee, a playwright who teaches at the ��ɫֱ�� Mississauga, has won the prestigious Siminovitch Prize, Canada’s highest valued theatre award.

The lucrative prize is awarded annually to a mid-career professional artist whose groundbreaking work significantly contributes to advancing the art form. It is named after playwright Elinore Siminovitch and University Professor Emeritus Lou Siminovitch.

The Siminovitch laureate receives $75,000 and the opportunity to select an up-and-coming artist to receive a $25,000 protégé prize. Yee, co-founding artistic director of fu-GEN Asian Canadian Theatre Company, selected Julie Phan, Toronto writer-performer and arts leader.

“I tell my students that there will come a time in the process of creating a play where you must relinquish control to the play itself – when the play will start to tell you what it wants to be,” Yee said in his acceptance speech. “This is what writing has taught me: how to listen to something greater than myself. Not just as a way to create, but as a way to live in the world.”

Yee, who studied theatre and drama studies at ��ɫֱ�� Mississauga and teaches playwriting at the university, won the Governor General’s Literary Award for Drama in 2015.

In 2021, he produced an audio drama about the infamous Cecil Hotel in Los Angeles, featuring fourth-year students from the Theatre and Drama Studies program offered jointly by ��ɫֱ�� Mississauga and Sheridan College.

Alicia Hawkins, an associate professor in the department of anthropology at ��ɫֱ�� Mississauga and collaborators at the Sagamok Anishnawbek First Nation and the Ojibwe Cultural Foundation (OCF) have received a Connaught Community Partnership Research Program award for their project exploring the cataloguing and reclamation of archaeological artifacts.

Historically, archaeology in Ontario has been an extractive practice that failed to include Indigenous communities. From the 1960s to 1980s, teams of archaeologists excavated at the La Cloche site on the north shore of Lake Huron – but the work was unpublished for decades.

More than 40 boxes of artifacts are now in the care of the OCF. However, the lack of publication and comprehensive reporting of the excavations pose challenges for the OCF and Sagamok Anishnawbek, on whose lands the site is located.

To address this, Hawkins and her partners will bring together a multigenerational team of Indigenous Peoples to catalogue and interpret the artifacts. The collaboration will guide the planning and decision-making process for the site and its collections.

The Connaught Community Partnership Research Program aims to help create and nurture partnerships between ��ɫֱ�� scholars and community partners that support community-driven research.

Hawkins is one of four ��ɫֱ�� scholars to receive awards from the program this year. The others are Amaya Perez-Brumer at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, Ishtiaque Ahmed in the Faculty of Arts & Science and Jaris Swidrovich at the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy.

Twenty faculty members from the ��ɫֱ�� have been awarded Canada Research Chairs in support of their research in areas ranging from LGBTQ2S+ youth mental health to quantum photonic technologies and sustainable suburban housing.

Awarded by the Government of Canada, Canada Research Chair positions are designed to reinforce academic research and training excellence with a view to improving depth of knowledge and quality of life, strengthening Canada’s international competitiveness and helping train the next generation of highly skilled people.

David Samson, an associate professor of evolutionary anthropology at the ��ɫֱ�� Mississauga, has won the 2023 Balsillie Prize for Public Policy awarded by the Writers’ Trust of Canada.

The Balsillie Prize is awarded annually for a non-fiction book that advances and influences policy debates on a wide range of social, political, economic or cultural topics relevant to Canadians, and carries a $60,000 cash prize. Samson was recognized for Our Tribal Future: How to Channel our Foundational Human Instincts Into a Force for Good, published by St. Martin’s Press.

“This award is not only a personal honour but also a recognition of the importance of understanding our shared evolutionary roots in shaping a brighter future,” said Samson, who is currently on leave to promote the book. He added he was thrilled and “grateful to the jury and everyone who's been part of this incredible journey.”

Jurors called Samson’s book an “important contribution to our public policy toolkit,” writing that Samson “provides a tour de force of how our tribal brains operate in our modern world. Things that were essential to our survival in the past now potentially imperil our future.”

Samson is the director of the Sleep and Human Evolution Lab based in ��ɫֱ�� Mississauga. His research aims to answer questions about human uniqueness along with the conditions and attributes that make our species “the most successful animal on the planet.”
