Professor Angela Schoellig of the ��ɫֱ�� Institute for Aerospace Studies (UTIAS) has earned an Arthur B. McDonald Fellowship from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC).

The award will further accelerate Schoellig’s leading-edge research into autonomous robotics for a variety of applications, from environmental monitoring to visual inspection of construction sites.

“I’m very honoured to be named in this year’s cohort of Arthur B. McDonald Fellowship recipients,” says Schoellig. “It will of course enhance the important research we are doing in Canada, but I also hope it will help inspire the next generation, especially young women, to see what they can achieve with a career in STEM.”

Previously known as the E.W.R. Steacie Memorial Fellowships, the Arthur B. McDonald Fellowships recognize early-stage academic researchers in the natural sciences and engineering and enhance their research capacity so that they can become leaders in their field.

Schoellig, who recently took up an Alexander von Humboldt Professorship at the Technical University of Munich, holds the Canada Research Chair in Machine Learning for Robotics and Control at ��ɫֱ�� Engineering, as well as a Canada CIFAR Chair in Artificial Intelligence.

“Professor Schoellig’s innovative work is at the leading edge of two fields – AI and robotics – that have tremendous potential to generate new technologies, solutions and businesses over the next couple of decades,” says Christopher Yip, dean of ��ɫֱ��’s Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering.

“It’s wonderful to see her recognized on the national stage, as she engages and advances this research internationally. On behalf of the Faculty, I extend her enormous congratulations.”

Ten ��ɫֱ�� researchers are receiving Connaught Innovation Awards to help them accelerate the development and commercialization of their promising technologies.

The winning projects were selected for their strong socio-economic and commercial potential and are expected to make a positive impact on society.

“One hundred years ago the world-changing discovery of insulin at the ��ɫֱ�� sparked a century of health innovation and advances by ��ɫֱ�� researchers,” said University Professor Ted Sargent, ��ɫֱ��'s vice-president, research and innovation, and strategic initiatives. “That legacy continues through programs such as the Connaught Innovation Awards – and the transformative research these fund today.

“From medical devices that allow us to better study the gut microbiome, to advances in sustainability that will make our planet a healthier place to live, this year’s winners are making important contributions locally and globally through their research – and I look forward to seeing the impact of their work.”

Professor Tim Barfoot of the ��ɫֱ�� Institute for Aerospace Studies (UTIAS) has been elected a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Robotics and Automation Society, for contributions to mobile robot navigation.

“As a kid building my first robots of out Lego, I could never have imagined where this field and career would take me,” said Barfoot, who is a double alumnus of the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering. “It’s been a lot of fun so far and I’m excited to see where robotics goes next.

“I would like to thank all those that helped me along the way through Engineering Science, MDA, and UTIAS, and I would like to dedicate this honour to another IEEE Fellow, Professor Bruce Francis (1947-2018), who served as an influential mentor to me,” he said.

Barfoot’s research focuses on the visual navigation of mobile robots. Such robots are used in many different sectors, including transportation, planetary exploration, mining, warehouses, offices, and military applications.

“Training robots to navigate safely and autonomously is among the most complex engineering challenges of our time, and Professor Barfoot’s embodies the world-leading advances we are making in this area,” said Chris Damaren, director of UTIAS.

“On behalf of the entire Institute, I warmly congratulate him on this well-deserved honour.”

Eight ��ɫֱ�� artificial intelligence researchers, all of whom are also faculty members at the Vector Institute, have been named CIFAR AI Chairs – a recognition of pioneering work in areas that could have global societal impact.

They are:

Jakob Foerster, who will be an assistant professor in ��ɫֱ�� Scarborough’s department of computer and mathematical sciences in 2020
Animesh Garg, an assistant professor of computer science
Anna Goldenberg, an associate professor in the department of computer science and a scientist in the genetics and genome biology lab at SickKids Research Institute
Chris Maddison, who will be an assistant professor in the departments of computer science and statistical sciences in 2020
Sheila McIlraith, a professor in the department of computer science
Gennady Pekhimenko, an assistant professor in computer science
Toniann Pitassi, a professor in computer science with a joint appointment in mathematics
Angela Schoellig, an assistant professor at ��ɫֱ��’s Institute for Aerospace Studies who leads its Dynamic Systems Lab

The CIFAR AI Chairs each receive five years of dedicated funding and are a key part of the country’s $125-million Pan-Canadian Artificial Intelligence Strategy, which seeks to attract and retain the top minds in the field.

Ten ��ɫֱ�� graduate students are receiving DiDi Graduate Awards in recognition of their contributions to the fields of artificial intelligence, vehicle autonomy, transportation analytics, human-machine interfacing and related topics.

They are the first ��ɫֱ�� students to receive scholarships from Beijing-based Didi Chuxing, the world’s largest ride-hailing service.

“��ɫֱ�� is very prestigious in cultivating outstanding leaders and innovators,” said Hongtu Zhu, chief scientist of statistics at DiDi. “DiDi hopes to contribute to this endeavor in fostering top talents to solve the world’s transportation, environmental and employment challenges with smart transportation innovations.”

The recipients are:

PhD students Danijar Hafner and Nicole Barbosa Sultanum, from the department of computer science in the Faculty of Arts & Science
Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering PhD students Alaa Itani and Junshi Xu of civil engineering; Hao Wang and Bilal Majed Taha of electrical and computer engineering and Dengbo He of mechanical and industrial engineering
