“The Killam Prize is one of the most distinguished recognitions a Canadian scholar can receive,” said University Professor Jutta Brunnée, dean of the Faculty of Law. “Professor Ripstein has made innumerable, signal contributions to legal thought and philosophy, and so it is fitting that the Canadian Council for the Arts has chosen to recognize him with this most prestigious honour.”

A fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and author of several influential books, Ripstein joined ��ɫֱ��’s department of philosophy in 1987 and was jointly appointed to the Faculty of Law in 1999.

“Arthur Ripstein is one of the most important legal and political philosophers in the world. The Killam Prize could not have gone to someone more deserving,” said Martin Pickavé, chair of the department of philosophy in the Faculty of Arts & Science. “Over the last 35 years, Arthur has crafted an impressive and hugely influential body of work while at the same time inspiring many students in law as well as in philosophy by his outstanding presence in the classroom.”

The Killam Prize is “such a high honour,” Ripstein said. “To be recognized for an academic career working in two disciplines – I am thrilled and humbled.”

The Royal Society of Canada, the nation's academy of scholars, scientists and artists, has bestowed prestigious awards on three ��ɫֱ�� faculty members.

Professor Anita Anand, the J.R. Kimber Chair in Investor Protection and Corporate Governance at ��ɫֱ��'s Faculty of Law, won the Yvan Allaire Medal for outstanding contribution in governance of private and public organizations.

Dwight Seferos, a professor in the department of chemistry, is receiving the Rutherford Memorial Medal in chemistry.

Lynne Viola, a University Professor in the department of history, has been awarded the Pierre Chauveau Medal, awarded biennially for a distinguished contribution to knowledge in the humanities, in a subject other than Canadian literature and Canadian history.

The scholars' work “is a reflection of the ��ɫֱ��’s excellence in research across a broad range of disciplines,” said Vivek Goel, ��ɫֱ��’s vice-president, research and innovation, and strategic initiatives.

Historian Lynne Viola awarded Killam Prize for humanities

Historian and University Professor Lynne Viola is the recipient of a 2019 Killam Prize – the top annual award of the Canada Council for the Arts.

Viola, one of the world’s leading scholars on Stalinist Russia, is receiving the prize for the humanities. Her books, which are rich in detail culled from primary sources such as the KGB archives, seek to create a more nuanced understanding of Soviet history. The Best Sons of the Fatherland (1987) focused on the supporters of Stalin’s regime. Peasant Rebels Under Stalin (1996) looked at state government resisters. The Unknown Gulag (2007) looked at Stalin’s victims and their fates and 2017’s Stalinist Perpetrators on Trial looked at those who implemented Stalin’s Great Terror, from 1936 to 1938.

Viola received the Molson Prize in 2018 for her significant contributions to the cultural and intellectual heritage of Canada.
