June 16 marks the final day of spring convocation at ��ɫֱ�� – three weeks of celebrations across three campuses bringing together family, friends, faculty, staff and 13,500 graduating students from around the world.

Convocation season is in full swing at ��ɫֱ��! The class of 2016 is 18,000 strong and over the course of three weeks this spring, 13,500 graduates will cross the stage at Convocation Hall to receive their ��ɫֱ�� degrees.

On Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and more, students shared great moments of joy, pride, love and gratitude with families, friends, staff and faculty.

��ɫֱ�� 's newest grads share photos and memories

Thousands of students, families and friends gathered this week to celebrate the accomplishments of the ��ɫֱ��’s newest alumni.

And the white marquee known as Convocation Plaza played a particularly prominent role throughout the week, offering visitors a warm welcome along with the usual refreshments, photography and school merchandise from the ��ɫֱ�� Bookstore .

“People are elated that they are finally done, everyone has been so nice, and it’s been rewarding to see both graduates and their families from all over the world come through being so excited,” said student Revati Tilokani, a member of the bookstore staff. “Seeing all those graduating has made me excited about school and it’s been great motivation to really study in my classes.

“Seeing everyone’s hard work pay off has been awesome.”

Elina Cook, who received her master's of science in medical biophysics, said ��ɫֱ��’s consistently high performance in rankings led her to pursue studies here. Cook, who recently accepted a research position at Sick Kids Hospital, had some advice for prospective students.

“Take the time to look into the people that are leading the research and science, or whatever you are interested in, and see if you can work with them,” Cook said, “because ��ɫֱ�� houses so many people that are doing amazing things on a world scale.”

For Katherine La Rocca, who received her master's of information, convocation marked the end of a journey that was long but fulfilling.

“I did my undergrad at ��ɫֱ�� so heading into my master’s I already knew it was a great school,” La Rocca said. “This is also one of the few schools in Canada that has the Faculty of Information and it’s my hometown so I feel connected to the city and the university; it just made sense to come here.

“Looking back, I would reach back to my undergrad to find my favourite moment. There was a particular Latin class that had a good group of people and a great professor and we just had excellent classes, like Winnie the Pooh in Latin.”

Receiving her master's in English felt like a significant accomplishment, said Sarah Powell, and she urged current students to take advantage of every opportunity at ��ɫֱ��.

“Realize how privileged you are to get to go to university,” Powell said, “and even though it's really hard sometimes just try to enjoy every second and take in as much as you can from these brilliant people that you are surrounded with.”

Convocation is just the beginning of the next phase, said Thanaro Rajalculenduan, who received his MSc in molecular phylogenetics

“It feels great to graduate, but I’m not done yet. I want to get my PhD.”

Incoming ��ɫֱ�� students might not realize it yet, but they’ll be attending classes in and around some of Canada’s most spectacular architecture.

One of the best places to see some of these storied buildings across three campuses is on the ��ɫֱ�� Instagram account. These visually striking and even quirky buildings comprise some of the favorite subjects of ��ɫֱ�� Instagrammers. But who built them and why are they an important part of the history and landscape of the Greater Toronto Area?

For answers, writer Dominic Ali turned to the man who wrote the book about the ��ɫֱ��’s campuses: Larry Richards. A professor emeritus and former dean of the ��ɫֱ��’s John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design, Richards is also the author of ��ɫֱ��: The Campus Guide published by Princeton Architectural Press.

Sakuras bloomed and ��ɫֱ��'s Instagram users captured the short-lived display

Cherry blossoms, sometimes called sakura, bloom so briefly - but when they do, they make for a lovely scene.

The ��ɫֱ�� is lucky to feature them as part of the landscaping at Robarts Library and at Scarborough campus, and this week their pink blooms drew out Instagram photographers from the university and beyond.

Students show their pride via smartphone app

Thumbs were wagging last week as a new crop of 14,000 joining the ��ɫֱ��'s student base demonstrated their back-to-school excitement via mobile phone Tweets, Facebook status updates and other social media shares. But it was Instagram that hosted the liveliest and most stylish collection of student-submitted orientation moments.

Hundreds of Instagrams tagged with #UofT poured in over orientation week and the first week of classes, showcasing amazing school spirit and ��ɫֱ�� pride. And since the smartphone application added short videos to its spread of features in June, the cheers, songs and dances of back to school captured below can be brought to life with a click of the triangular "play" button in the top right-hand corner.
